I often get the question, “Do you offer wedding photography, in addition to video?” My answer has always been, and will always be, “No.” As the quote goes, “You can be the Jack of all trades, but Master of none”. It’s EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to hire a Wedding Videographer, who SPECIALIZES, and has plenty of years of experience, in videography.
The #1 regret of married couples, is not hiring an experienced videographer for their wedding. Does that mean that I think all companies who offer both services are bad? Not at all! But, they are the exception, rather than the rule. Hiring a service, just because it’s convenient, can have it’s drawbacks. With the evolution of DSLR cameras now being able to shoot video, more and more photographers are now offering video packages simply because they can. Most have very little video experience, and are charging just as much, if not more, than outside videographers. I firmly believe that having your hands in too many different areas, will lead to a sub-par product, in at least one of the services. So, you may end up with photos that you LOVE, and a video that’s just okay, or vice-versa. All for the sake of convenience.
Some companies even argue that you are “guaranteed to have your Photographer and Videographer get along”, if you purchase both services from them. However, true Wedding Professionals are respectful of ALL vendors that they are working with, and in reality, isn’t something that is a widespread problem. In over 20 years of working in the Wedding industry, I’ve always gotten along with photographers. I believe that it’s more rare than these companies would lead you to believe, and is sometimes used as a scare tactic. In fact, if you are trying to hire a photographer who’s telling you that all outside videographers will ruin their shots, I would question how professional that photographer is, and how well they work with others. If this is a concern for you, most photographers will be able to recommend outside, reputable videographers that they love to work with, and the same for videographers.
As everyone knows, weddings are expensive! In reality, getting an inferior wedding video, is better than getting none at all, but feeling that you have wasted your money, or received an inferior product, is never a great feeling. The best way to guard against this is by doing your research and making sure you hire experience videographers, who specialize in video, with a proven track record of success and experience.
